The new Green Party Leader is facing calls to sack his deputy after video has surfaced of him appearing to downplay October 7 massacre.
“This is an exciting moment for the Green Party and the Jewish community as a whole,” the Jewish Greens said in a statement. Vivien Lichtenstein, founder of the Jewish Greens, “He won’t say anything that could be interpreted as antisemitic... because all of those conversations have been had,” Lichtenstein said, referring to the Green Party antisemitism training.
In 2021, the Green Party adopted two separate definitions of antisemitism: the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition and the Jerusalem Declaration, in a move that was criticised as "contradictory" by some observers. Lichtenstein, however, expressed confidence in the party’s approach and spoke positively about Ali, whom she has met face-to-face.
“I think it's terrific,” she said. “We have a very diverse executive... we've got a Jewish leader, a Muslim deputy leader, and, as somebody [posted] on Twitter, a middle-class white deputy leader.” “Our leadership team represents the best of diverse and progressive modern Britain – a hopeful vision of what Britain could be”.

Authorities in London have arrested nearly 900 people during a protest in support of the banned group Palestine Action, police say.
Defend Our Juries, the campaign group that organised Saturday’s protest, rejected police claims that the demonstrators were violent. “Among the 857 arrestees were vicars and priests, war veterans and descendants of Holocaust survivors, retired teachers and healthcare workers,” the group said in a statement. It accused the police of making “many false claims and attempts to smear the protesters” to justify arresting peace demonstrators with signs that read: “I oppose genocide – I support Palestine Action.”
“While the Met has failed to provide any evidence backing up their claims, video footage clearly shows the Met violently arresting people, wielding their batons and pushing people to the ground,” Defend Our Juries said. “We’re nonviolent, how about you?”
