Must admit my fledgling attempts at producing a petrol powered iPhone have met with some technical success but less so market ones

Many years ago, I was a subscriber to New Scientist" (I packed it in as I no longer had the time to read article after article of ifs, mights, and possiblies though).

I do recall such an article though that is relevant to your post.
A group of researchers had developed a tiny fuel cell which could fit in and power an iPhone for days, from a drop of fuel.
And it was filled and refilled like a lighter.

Well, my EV6 has just had its first service (20k miles).

1 x new pollen filter
1 x new brake fluid
Update to infotainment system
Brakes and discs barely worn, according to the technician
All four tyres - contrary to the reports of EVs chewing through them - are above 4.5mm of tread remaining

....Electric cars are completely unattractive for several reasons, primarily their cost
Some manufacturers offer a petrol and BEV version of the same car for the same price.

relatively short lives,
Nope. Even a cheap and cheerful MG ZS EV taxi managed to do 238K as a taxi and is still going strong under new ownership. The traction battery is still in a good state of health. Sure, some parts need replacing, as you'd expect at that mileage, but nothing major and nothing eye-wateringly expensive.

lack of range,
Not really. Our car, at the lower end of EV ranges gets a minimum of 200 real life miles and takes a maximum of 50 minutes to get from 10% to 97%. Other cars have a much bigger range.

expensive to run unless you have your own charger, and...
It depends where you charge. Some charging companies give a discount if you use their app. Some Tesla chargers are open to all and are much cheaper than the usual 79/ 89p.

they do tend to explode and burst into flames!
Check out the statistics.

We have managed to drive 25K miles in 2 years and 3 months without any issues at all. The only thing we have had done is two new tyres on the rear (RWD).

I've just checked my Wallbox (home charger) app and, since July 2024 I have put a bit shy of 4000 kwh into my car.
Almost all at cheapo night rate of less than 6p per kwh, giving a total leccy spend of less than £250.

As I've only charged while out-and-about a handful of times to my recollection, that's well over 15k miles of the 20k I've covered, for £250.

Just out of curiosity, if searching for a used hybrid which factor reduces the service life of the traction battery .. age of the car or mileage covered?

There are 3 different types of hybrid.

Mild hybrid, which have tiny batteries.
Full Hybrids that have varying sizes of battery depending on the manufacture.
Plug-in hybrids, again have varying battery sizes. The biggest of these I believe is in the MG HS PHEV which can do up to 75 miles in EV mode.

I think both age and mileage affect service life and I think lack of use is also detrimental.

Is it just my age, or do others have a mental image of very large lead-acid cells when they see "traction battery" ? Yeah I know it's the right term, but mentally I can't help associating it with "stuff from the distant past"
