This is going to be a big problem isn't it?

Here are some photos of the tap I have in my kitchen. Why the heck are the pipes sealed in?! I can't get underneath to check the connections and right now after having changed the ceramic cartridges, my tap base has become wobbly. I can't get underneath to tighten anything.
A plumber previously told me I would have to remove the sink, cut the granite and then replace the whole kitchen unit. Please tell me there is an easier way? Can't we just cut a bigger hole in the wood underneath?

Get a multi-tool on to the chip board to enlarge the hole enough so you can get a basin wrench in there. Use something to protect the copper pipe from the blade in the highly likely event that you slip.

Seems like a dumb place to use chipboard!!! Best bang a sealant of some kind on cut edge.

Thank you Nozzle! If I do ever need to change this tap, would enlarging that chipboard opening be ok? I seriously can't afford to rip out the granite and the sink.

Remove the waste from the sink, cut around the silicone between the sink and work top then pull it out. Then change the tap if need be.

Unless the original fitter went to town with the silicone and used it on the base of the sink you should be fine
