I need to replace my downstairs toilet this weekend.

The last couple of toilets I've bought have come with the cistern fully fitted whereas this time I need to fit the inlet valve and flush valve myself.

How do I judge how tight these need to be? Obviously they need to be tight enough not to leak but I know it's possible to crack the cistern by overtightening. What's a good rule of thumb?

Experience comes in to it but they tend to come come with thick washers which help. Just go with what feels tight and see what happens. It Isn't too easy to crack a cistern.

Usually hand tight and a nip up, but everyone’s hand tight is different ;)
