Can I use cement to lay slate tiles on a hearth or do I need to use proper tile adhesive?
Thanks

Hm. Adhestion is probably OK with cement, but it would set rock hard and you would lose all flexibility.

Even if you're not regularly walking on the hearth area, flexible floor tile adhesive is the correct thing to use. You should be able to find a small enough quantity for that area.

use a flex mud /mix as the slate WILL move an Dont Grout the spaces use a flex fire mix on 5mm expansion grout spaces

Then you will have no probs ever :)

hope this helps
