I am looking at replacing our existing bathroom floor (vinyl) with ceramic tiles.

The floor consists of standard wooden floor boards - house is 100 years old.

Just wondered what the thinking is regarding the best/easiest substrate to lay prior to tiling? Should I use plywood or are the proprietary tile backing boards as good (or even better maybe?).

The manufacturers seem to recommend 6mm backing boards for floors whereas I believe that 12mm ply is what is usually specified.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tile backing boards are better. You need to make sure that the floor is solid & doesn't deflect before you lay them.

The backing board in more rigid hence ply needs to be 12mm minimum if used, though as stated backer board is preferable.

I think the ply & the backer board are doing different things. Ply isn't as dimensionally stable as backer boards and so not so good to tile onto - you can get cracked tiles as the ply expands and contracts and takes the tiles with it.
