Random green slate is the best imo.
Slates are a pain in the ass. God forsake the man who invented 'em. 
Plain clays are the bees.
Conker interlocking are a doddle.
As for colour - anything other than buff.

for me it has to be 20x12 new welsh slate gr8 to lay espescially in this weather
