Hi all. I know I can trust you all to help me!

I am goint to tile a whole kitchen floor. its about 4m by 3m give or take.

It is half tiled and half carpeted. the tiles are ceramic glazed and stuck well down so i want to tile on top as its impossible to lift them.

However, the problem is that where its carpeted, there will be a difference of about an inch in level.

I was thinking of using leveling compound to raise the level of the currently carpeted area to that of the tiled area?

Incidentally, the whole floor area is concrete but when the house was build in the 50's the kitchen was laid with these hard black slate like tiles about 6in square. My house is similay and i tiled on top of these ok and obviously the tiled area in this kitchen is also ok. just thought i'd mention it.

finally, do I need to key the ceramic tiles before tiling on them?

cheers for your hlep,

Jim :)
