I’m wanting to lay 1200x1200 porcelain tiles on a floor where only 4 tiles will be enough. I’m wondering if I was to lay it with the tiles touching each other without a gap, does this work or are there downsides to this? Essentially trying to reduce the visibility of the joint and grout lines really

How will you prevent liquids from getting under the tiles if you don't use grout.

Most tiles (unless rectified) are not exactly the same size.

If rectified, you could use a 2mm grout line and use a grout the same colour as the tiles.

If not rectified, a 4mm grout line might be safer.

I used large format tiles on a worktop , used a bead of silicon along edge before butting tight together then wipe off excess.
