Tiling on concrete wall

This may sound like a silly question as I've seen tiles laid on a concrete floor, but is it feasible to tile on top of a newly rendered wall or is best to have it plastered first?

Render will be fine, infact better than plaster as the render will not deteriorate if it gets wet unlike plaster.
