Tiling on wood

I have read here that before tiling on wood you should apply Bal primer.
How do you apply this primer, is it a liquid that can be brushed on?
The area to be tiled is only two sections, these are down each side at the front end of a shower about 8 foot x 2 inches wide. The rest of the tiling will be on Hardibacker inside the shower encloser. The other walls are plaster but have been emulsion painted. Can I tile on to emulsion paint?

Brush, but whether you need to prime or not depends on the tile adhesive you are using.
