Is it ok to tile travetine on to a ply wall?

And if so with what sort of adhesive

depending on the thickness of the ply the answer is yes, and you would need a Powdered flexible adhesive ( 1 part or 2 part flexible) and also flexible grout

What thickness ply would you recommend

i would suggest you fix a cement based backerboard 12.5mm thick,these will take a lot more weight per m2,than wbp ply..

travertine is a heavy tile.
