Tiling Travertine

Tanking or overboard plasterboard with something stronger wont be of any benefit unless you mechanically fix through into the wall/stud behind, just bonding backer boards or using a tanking membrane over it will not make the weakest substrate (plasterboard) any stronger.

I don’t understand your tiler’s logic of putting up new MR plasterboard & then covering it with a 6mm tile backer board. I can guarantee your travy tiles do not weigh in at 6 kg/sqm & you need a decent 12.5mm backer board (you should only even use 12.5mm on walls) for tiles that size/weight.

At least youve seen sense with the "no grout" idea.

Thx Tictic. We're sorted with what's needed now. Remaining question seems to be tiling over shower upstands. There seems to be an opinion that tiling should be laid onto and not over for primary reason that if tray needs to be removed then no tiles damaged

An update. Tanked p/board with Mapei tanking kit. Found a local specialist tiler (natural stone) and got a superb job at at a very reasonable price. The prep work with the guidance of those who responded constructively to this post helped a hell of a lot and if there's anyone looking for for a natural stone tile installer within Lancashire PM me and I'll happily forward his contact details.
