Timber Frame gable end wall

Hi all,

Quick question, visited a friend today who said that his house was a timber frame building. Was carrying out some work in the loft space when I noticed both the gable wall and dividing wall were made up of blockwork. Surely if this was timber frame you would see exposed beams and there wouldn't be the blockwork there? [/i]

Sounds like he's mistaken - unlikely to be a timber frame with blockwork at high level.

Exactly my thoughts, just didn't seem right. Is there any other way of telling if this is a timber frame?

Use a stud finder on the external walls?
Ask a neighbour the construction of their house?
Make a hole in an external wall in a hidden location...stair cupboard or something?

It's not going to be timber though...
