I am researching into doing a loft conversion at my property (semi detached) and have found this forum to be very informative so thanks thus far. I do have a question though I can't seem to find an answer for. For a hip to gable loft conversion is a gable end extension (the bit of wall where sloped roof used to be) built in brick superior to one built with a timber frame? I ask as a friend is have this done and his is being built with a timber frame. I assume brick built wall would be better but just wondering what the experts think. Is there also much difference in cost?

Thanks
Mike

In a simplistic view what is better considering all aspects? Timber or brick. I am not a builder so do not know what the criteria are or what there is to consider with each material hence me asking here. At a guess I'd assume brick to be stronger and more expensive but as for insulation properties and anything else I wouldn't know. If anyone could enlighten me it would be appreciated.

One is no better than the other. And no cost or performance difference either.

A well constricted clay brick wall will go on to give you 100+ years of maintenance free service. No other externally exposed product can offer the same.
