Imagine two peaces of 2 x 4, crossing at an angle, with a single bolt through the centre, pulling them tightly together, and you want ensure the angle remains stable, no movement of the angle of the two timbers. You would fit something like a large washer with spikes either side of it, to dig into the two bits of timber, and thus prevent any subsequent movement.

What would such a washer be called please? If there is nothing made for the job, what could I adapt?

I'm rebuilding our picnic table, which has always suffered a problem, with the angles of the joints slipping, when you sit on one side, or the other.

The thingummy is a "timber connector".
Or you could use wood glue.
