Hi folks, we are about to take possession of some timber sections possibly dating back to the 17th century, as a result of some restorative work carried out in the bell tower of our local church.
Sadly, after being inside the building all this time, the only use we have for the timbers is outdoors in the garden so I'm asking if anyone could suggest a suitable preservative to help protect wood this old.

Grateful for any informed advice, thanks all.

Probably oak.

Very plausible, thank you for your opinion.
There exists a report (by an expert, compiled last year) on the structural condition of the framework. I'll try to track it down as it might mention the species.
