time

breezer

had an email form someone, and they commented that time i sent them an email was not right.

for example.

i actualy send email at 16.00
they say it was recieved at say 11.00 (yes before i sent it)

I then check emails from them, and it would seem to me that it is their end that have it wrong, since emails from them have a similar discrepency.

so my question is this.

when sending an email where does the time stamp come from?

their pc, or the server they are using?

Usually the time/date stamp you see in your browser, is the time/date that the user submitted the message to the mail system. RFC2822 specifies that this should be the moment the user makes the decision to send. Hence your senders mail browser should insert this field into the message header.

In practice, it's not a mandatory field. If your senders mail application doesn't specifically insert the date/time field, I believe the recieving smtp server (at his ISP) site will insert this field using it's own date/time.

Did you send the email using a client or via a webmail service? Also, where was the recipient located?
