tips on building wall

Im going to build a U shaped wall 60cm high and 2m long with concrete blocks, using 1:5 mortar. im pretty good at diy and have spent a while researching how to mix the mortar up etc, but can anyone give me any tips/tricks or general advise on the bricklaying bit. like the thickness of the mortar, and do i twist the brick into the mortar ?

any help much appreciated, im doing it on saturday.
