To tile under shower tray or not?

I'm renovating upstairs bathroom and intend to lay ceramic floor tiles. My idea was to cover the whole area in tile and leave a space for the shower tray drainer. This would mean I don't have to cut any curves to match the quadrant shower tray. My plumber advises this is not usual practise and that the tray should be tiled up to and not under. Although he doesn't seem clear on why this is.

Any thougths?

He's right, it's not normal practice, but there's no reason why you shouldn't. Your reasoning concerning the cutting of tiles sounds spot on. As long as the shower tray has a flat surface to sit on, it doesn't make much difference. I'm with you on this one.
