I have a ring of toadstalls in my lawn. What is the best way to get rid of them for good ?

Oooh! you've got a fairy ring.

Its a bit of a pain to get rid of. You may notice the grass in the ring is not as healthy as the rest of the lawn and sadly its not caused by fairies getting on down at the woodland disco. Its caused by a fungus and it chokes the grass roots.

The only way to deal with it is to dig out the soil to 30 cm depth and 30cm width beyond the circle and replace with fresh soil and turf. You could try the Royal Horticultural Society website, or bash in fairyrings and see if you can find any more info.

You need to do exactly as Nerine says.
As it depletes the nutrients it requires in the centre, the ring will grow bigger searching for more fertile ground.
Left unchecked it will ruin your lawn.......

or you could just knock the tops off with a rake, and leave it. When the weather changes they will disappear.

No they will not.......... fairy rings are totally different to the odd toadstool or mushroom.

You can't just leave a ring fairy circuit with live ends, and replacing it with good soil is Part Z notifiable.

Yes, but only in England and Wales.

Does it apply to commercial lawns as well?

Thanks for all the posts even the comical ones. The fairy ring that i have is a bl***y big one and the thought of doing all that digging just for my front lawn is OTT, and my 2 young daughters (2 &6)would never forgive me if i dug them up now.So for the seeable future, well until the kids get older f**k the front lawn.

Years ago I had the same problem and a old boy told me to fork holes in the ring then mix up bicarbonate of soda, and using a watering can spray all over the ring. It worked for me.
