Toilet/shower in a bedroom (not an ensuite)?

Friends have got a house with attached garage. They plan to convert this as a room, long-term thinking for elderly relatives so bathroom facilities would be a big plus and a tiny ensuite was suggested.

However the builder doing a quote pointed out the minimum space needed for an ensuite would make the remaining bedroom very small. I didn't realise there were regs on that but anyway, then my wife mentioned a B&B she's staying at has a shower directly in the bedroom.

Got me thinking is that allowed - prison-style bedroom with a loo in the corner? I'm not saying it's wonderful but can you?
If not, what are the rules on minimum bathroom size?

Not an issue as long as there is a whb in the same room.
We have our wc in the lounge next to the tv - keeps visitors from staying too long.

They are lovely pictures but I couldn’t imagine myself having a **** while my missus is in bed reading her book.

Edit, the **** could be a poo or a tug.
