On a number of occasions, I have gone to post on a topic, that has had little, if no replies.
But when I submit my replies on these topics, there is then often displayed a number of replies, which have not all been made in the last few minutes, some are hours old, but they are not displaying when I first visit the topic. Please explain why?

Could be a server side caching fault. We get this on our corporate website at my work, and it's the fault of a caching service that Microsoft azure employ called Redis. Alas, there's nithing the end user can do to clear our Redis caches from a read only perspective, they have to write to it. Not that they know this of course..
