I have just been given another TV!. The set is a toshiba set (could be around 25 years old) and when I turn it on it makes a buzzing sound, sounds as though it is coming from the EHT cap on the CRT.
What I am also asking is how do I degausse it if I havent got a special hand held degaussier? The chap who gave it to my father had it in a garage for about 18 months right next to a massive loudspeaker!.

It can be difficult to judge where the noise is coming from without removing the back. There will potentially be high voltages even if the set is disconnected, so unless you know how to make it safe, stay out.

Assuming you've got a raster (cos you want to degauss it) it could be anything from a dry joint/bad connection to a fractured lopt.

You will need a wand to degauss.

Was the TV working when put in the garage?

If so, its probably just damp if is as been left in a garage. Have you ever removed an EHT cap from a tube before? If so, remove it and dry everthing out with a hair dryer. If not the proceed with caution.

I saw my Mother once pick up a tube that had been left out side for days. She managed to put her finger in the anode cap hole of the tube. It still gave her a belt after all that time.

As for the degauss, if the positor in the set is working corectly, it should cure itself from a cold switch on. You may have to do it a few times

Sorry, I forgot to mention I have a city and guilds 6958 level 2 and level 3 certificate, it's just that I havent actually done very much with TVs before. What I did is remove the back of the set and switch it on so I can be fairly sure the EHT cap is where the noise is coming from. I was thinking is it possible that there could be a loose connection of the EHT lead to the anode cap?.
I have removed a EHT cap from a tube before but only from tubes that I knew were fully discharged of EHT potential. Its five days today (9 June) since the set has been switched off for. About how long will I have to wait to be fairly sure the tube's EHT has discharged?
The reason I suspect the problem with the picture is due to magnetism is because it was left right next to a massive loudspeaker like i mentioned for about 18 months. It was working before it went in the garage.
Because like I mentioned I have not done a very lot with TVs before how would you test the positor?
I know what it is but would just like a reminder how to test it.
Any advice welcome
