Asus Aspire A515-55, about a year old.

TPad was always missing some taps, but while I was using it it just stopped working. I reinstalled the driver, uninstalled the tp and let it reinstall, Control Panel says it's "Working normally".

Sounds like hardware broken to me.

Any other suggestions before I strip the files and send it off and spend a day or two reinstalling all the hooky software?

I've tried holding various keys down while restarting, but can't make it do a Safe Mode launch.

Uninstalled the latest W10 update - no difference.

When W10 starts there's very short show of a touchpad icon and hand, with a red line across it, as in Not Working.

Not just disabled? You can usually disable them. May be a switch or function key.

Used to be F8 iirc, but had to be pressed at the right time

Yes, holding F8 when rebooting, will enter Safe Mode.

Fn and F7 is the key combination to enable or disable the touchpad (used when typing a lot, to avoid spurious inputs from your palms!) :)
