I've had a new central heating system installed in my flat which includes a towel warmer that is dual fuel with a 200w element.

The system was half done and not filled up so that i could remove the towel warmer to paint behind it. After putting it back on the wall i tested to see if the element would heat up which it did although the towel warmer was empty of water at the time.

The system was later filled up, inhibiter added and boiler comissioned. I tested the element again and this time it didnt heat up. I swopped the fuse out of the fused switched spur that it connects to but this made no difference.

The plumber reckoned the element had blown as the towel warmer contained no water when it was turned on.

Does this sound right and i now have to drain the towel warmer and replace the element? :(

take the cable out of the fused spur and check for continuity.

a wee quick question, would you switch on an empty kettle?

no, but then again there's never been a need to.

Do the elements in kettles get damaged if they contain no water?

What causes this to happen?
