Yes I agree, its not like there are war torn areas where people have to flees bombs or end up in refugee camps.

When you consider how much easier and closer Australia would be. I think you right.
Australia would offer a better standard of living and a climate similar to what they are used to.
So what is pulling people this distance to our shores

How do you know numbers of people are not being secretly smuggled into Australia or similar?

It wasn't a joke nor was it meant to be funny.
The tragedy is that these poor ignorant people did not know they were about to be suffocated/froze to death. Its not like buying a ticket for a train ride. The bastads that profit from these desperate people want stringing up by the nut-sack.
