Hi

I am looking for advise on a project I want to start for my bedroom. As this is my first post I will introduct myself. I am 22 and work in IT ( I still like to get my hands dirty) and have been doing DIY for about 2 years.

I want to add a tray to the border of my ceiling however I would like to have rope lighting in the tray aswell as my projector and projector screen. Because my room is in a extension I do not have access to all the lighting cables and after speaking to my friend who is a MT for the council he said running cables will be a huge pain and a lengthy process.

What I want to know is as I never done this before, would it be easier to rip the drywall from the ceiling and sort the wiring out and then buy new materials and insulation to add it back again? Would this also be expensive too?

I can't find much information on installing a tray ceiling from a amatuer perpective. If anyone could forward some info aswell that would be great!

Thanks

What do you mean by installing rope lighting in the tray.
Do you want to dress the tray up with rope lighting or are intending to install small LED lights in to the ceiling/tray surface.
If you already have light in the room and the room is a recent extension, there is a good chance you can loop in to that fitting and providing the joist run the right way and the tray will run in line with the existing light fitting you could get away with minimum damage, but the switch drops can cause a problem. You could route some part of the switch wires in the tray but you will need to route to a suitable/practical swicthing point.

I hope to achieve the same effect as the pic below but a more square tray.

My extension is not recent, we moved into my house 18yrs ago and it was there then. I know from other work that has been done in house people have commented on how old the wiring setup is.

From what you have said seems alot of work and trial and error. How difficult is it to take the ceiling down and manage the cables via that, in my head it sounds alot easier but I am not the professional. Would I also be able to keep the insulation or is that not possible?
