Treatment of mock tudor beams and gable timber in victorian house

I am looking for some advice regarding how to go about treating this timber and making it look new and last longer.
I am looking at getting some oil/wax and then followed by veneer to finish off? ?

any advice would be gratefully received

the Timber is outdoors no rotting or insects ...but general wear and weather damage

Hi sbsuresh, you might want to post a picture of the area you would like advice on. There are a lot of knowledgeable trades people and diyers that could point you in the right direction. Hope this helps.

I would personally look at using Sikkens basecoat and then the top coat. If you’re after a long lasting quality finish look no further. It’s a bit pricey but you get what you pay for.

Veneer? Or do you mean varnish?

Ordinarily mock Tudor timers are supposed to look aged, however, if the timber is fairly bad you can fill and splice any rotten timer with epoxy resin filler (search for Timbabuild or RepairCare). Epoxy resin fillers are pretty expensive though and you will been to buy the branded skeleton guns to dispense the filler. Timbabuild's gun and fillers are significantly cheaper than Repaircare's (but still expensive). If you do fill any timber you will need to consider using a finish that will mask the colour of the filler.
