Hi, desperate for some help. My boiler keeps tripping. Is there anything I can do?

Kindly give us some more info, Wendy - does it lock out immediately or run for a while? Does it start at all? Does it make a chuffing sound....that sort of thing.
When you press the lockout button (red lamp) does the burner start up?
John :)

 I would love to stop feeding it anyrhing at all. It's a bleeding me dry monster, but needs must at mo I'm afraid. It runs for a while, heats water & rads then trips out. If I need more heat I have to go out to garage to reset. Yes it starts & yes the burner starts up when button reset, as for chuffing noises, it makes a lot of chuffing noise! Can the reset button be bypassed? :? :?

Wendy, I think your boiler is crying out for a service......if its just started to lock out (maybe when its breezy) then this could indicate low fuel pressure, but there are other reasons, naturally.
Chuffing noises aren't a good sign, and neither is any visible smoke at the flue - it should run smoothly all the time.
The lockout system can't be bypassed......even courtesy of Andy's visions, man.
John :)

Now that is a good sign. No smoke signals! Yes, I'm absolutely positive it does need a service but surely that's just throwing more money into it's greedy little mouth? When it very likely just wants to go to the great boiler heaven in the sky! I just want it to last me a few months until I can get a replacement, & then try & decide what to replace it with!! :?

To be fair Wendy these boilers ( I think) use the Inter 10 or 99 burner which are generally reliable (MSLA oil pump??) and parts are available.
The chances are it needs a good clean out, and a pressure test put on the pump, followed by a flue gas analysis.
Does the thing lock out after a specific time interval, every time?
John :)

To be honest I'm not sure. It definitely runs for quite a time, rads get really hot! It's very temperamental. I only ever have it on timer so goes off early evening, sometimes runs ok & sometimes trips. What can I say? :) Oh well, Seems I will have to get it looked at! Thanks for your help.

It could be the motor capacitor, it can start, but when the burner has got hot it could be more difficult to start. It could be the oil filter(s) partly blocked, it could be soot on the photocell. It could be something else.

If you get someone in, let them ask you a few questions over the phone. No questions = don't have them in, and go on to the next one.

The centrajet is awkward to work on, and is quite old so a replacement boiler is a reasonable option, but then so is a replacement service guy. If you talk to anyone don't mention replacement boiler, they use this as indicating a plumb ready for picking.

If you are told they can't get the parts, or you are instantly told it's not worth touching, and that you need a new boiler, get someone else. Their job is to fix your problem at reasonable cost, not max out your spend, and this problem is fixable at reasonable cost.

Favourite faults on these are photocells, which were originally high temp versions no longer available, or tired oil pumps that no longer are able to raise the oil to the pump. A look at by one who knows is probably the best, or lump it for a few more months and hope it carries on till you change.

If the rads are getting really hot sounds like thermostat problem to me.
The electronics on these is old, thunderbirds flashing lights and the lot.

Me thinks overdue for an upgrade.

Wake up DC!!! The lady says it is LOCKING OUT how has that got anything to do with the thermostat???

More like a faulty Solenoid Coil on the MSLA pump!!

Can't remember the boiler but I would think it has an overheat
"lockout" feature. What customer is telling us and what we
understand by it might not be one and the same.
Customer has given us a glue that the radiators are "really hot".

NO the Centrajet has No Latching Overheat Thermostat
many of them do not have an Overheat stat at all!!
(thats the great thing about older boilers, they are not bogged down with so called safety devices)
