I have had an extension on to my house and am having double glazing fitted to the whole house. The window fitter said there would only be trickle vents on the windows of the the extension and not all the windows. Should I insist on havng trickle vents on all the windows or are they not necessary.

regulations ask for new build only to be fitted with trickle vents, though it would do no harm to have the rest done. usually costs an extra £20.00 ish per window.

my suppliers fix a 20mm knock-on to the window head when dealing with trickle vents. this helps prevent the plaster from interfering with the trickles.

The Building Regulations do not require trickle vents - only that the building be adequately ventilated. Trickle vents are just one means of achieving this. You have to decide whether you want them, and if not, what alternative means of ventilation is provided.
