Tried to install windows 11 on an old laptop.

I read that someone had installed windows 11 on a 12 year old laptop. I have a 15 year old HP laptop that I just kept as a back up to my desktop pc and tablet. I installed windows 10 on it when it came out and would install the security updates every now and then. So following a YouTube tutorial I had a go at installing windows 11 on it. All went well as far as installing it starting, going slowly so left it and went and had my tea. Went back after about an our and the blank screen just showed the 4 blue squares in the centre. No keys would activate anything, would not even turn off, had to release the battery cover to turn it off. Was running on mains power during install attempt. Is it knackered? No big deal really but would like to know what happened to it. If anybody with more knowledge than me could throw some light on this I would be much obliged.

Put Linux mint on it or other operating system. That will keep it going

I can't put anything on it at the moment as it won't respond to anything. I think it has packed up, could not cope with the stress of windows 11!

Swap for a new SSD driver. Cheap enough

Couldn't agree more, rid yourself of MS's Corporate blanket and make the switch to Linux. I like Ubuntu. Its a 32/64bit "windows based" interface, free, supported, with a plethoa of free add-ons, apps, regulated software to keep the non-programming user IT fulfilled. I've run it from a CD-Rom for recovery of old pictures on a 386CPU'd laptop. Marvellous once you're initiated.

I have a fast desktop which is not compatible with W11.
The shop which built it said to take it in and he'd do the changes to make it accept W11, while I wait, free.
He warned that if I tried to do it I could easily "brick" it.

I have never come across a laptop or desktop which would not power down after holding the power button for 10 seconds.

If you did get it running on Windows 11 the performance is likely to be pretty poor with that age of laptop.

I agree that Linux Mint would be a much better idea.

i think y cant do it with old proccessor y can read about this on Microsoft offical site
and y really dont need it use Linux or oldest Win version

I have sent for another ssd and will attempt to install windows 10 again with the windows 10 media installation tool I have on a usb. If that works will investigate Linux. Another old laptop I had, again one of my daughter's old ones, I have it changed to a Chrome book.

There are stripped down versions of Windows 11 available. I installed one on my partners 15 year old Toshiba laptop that had been running Windows 7. That was a couple of years ago and it is working just fine.
