trimphone conection

wired up a trimphone to an extension cable,pushed it into socket, call my own no and it rings ok.
but when i pick up the handset all i have got is a lot of white noise cant even here the ring tone. any ideas,

How did you wire it up?
When you say ring tone do you mean dial tone?,
What sort of trimphone? Has it got a dial or push button?
Maybe a photo reqd,
On the bottom it will have a code with type and year.

there was no need to tell u how, as the telwephone was 20 yrs old and it wanted cleaning inside, that was IT.
