If Iran wanted a nuclear bomb they could have built one years ago.
They said they didn't need a nuclear bomb.
They probably regret that now.

The American policy has been to fund and support Israel in its takeover of Gaza, West Bank, Golan Heights, Jerusalem and parts of Lebanon.

The repetitive unprovoked attacks by Israel and USA ensures that Iran will work toward improved defensive capabilities. Who wouldn't?

And the rationale for Gulf War 2 was the nebulous idea of WMD.
The rationale for the USA involvement in the Vietnam war was the discredited attack by North Vietnam in the Gulf of Tonkin.
