Looking at a certain sig by our resident Yank reminds me how people have tried it on in the past.

When I did small plumbing jobs in the past I always made a point of running the hot water to see if it was getting hot as there was no way I was paying for a hot water fault. I did notice that at one place the water stayed cold and I informed the clt not that he would have tried to get one over on me! 8)

Anyone else had the punters try it on?

I read about one on here, and didn't believe it.
Then it happened to me. I'd part-drained a system and refilled, only to find the cust gripping one rad and saying it wasn't getting hot but it was fine before.
With the boiler on max neither pipe got warm. It wouldn't bleed. So I thought of that thing I'd read, and lifted the rad off the wall. The rad tails came out of the floor. They'd never been connected.
I added £15 diagnostic fee.

and I only charge £200 to fit 'em like that

The favourite scam customers try & pull is the old "Boiler needs a Service".

Our office staff always ask if the boiler has any problems and the answer is always the same "OH NO IT JUST NEEDS A SERVICE".
However when you get there you find a Combi with a bucket full of water underneath, or the HW is only luke warm, or the boiler is at Lock-out!!

Needless to say our Engineers alway commence work with a functional test of the boiler and visual inspection BEFORE THE TOOLS COME OUT OF THE VAN. That way there can be no argument about diagnostic & repair charges when they are added to the bill at the end

These people are a real pain, because our office allow about an hour for a routine Service so book "X" number of calls in a day, only to find that the 1st job takes 3 hours to complete it completely cocks up the engineers day!!

usually in a bar after a boiler change/service

A few years back i was called out by a bloke who said his immersion wasn't working. Got there and was shown upstairs to airing cupboard. All doors closed and quite dark. Asked for landing light to be switched on and he said the bulb had gone.

Did my electrical safety and isolated.

Just as i knelt down i had to lean a little forward to engage the immersion spanner. As i did i put my hand on the carpet......wet.

Goes and gets torch light (i know i should have done this earlier.... you learn all the while!) now i can see someone (probably cust although he denied it) had already had a go....and kinked the neck of the immersion boss and split the tank......

Told him he needed a new tank. He didn't want to pay for one suprise suprise. Now he watched me the whole time.....bet i know who he would have claimed had damaged the tank if i had fitted the spanner on.....

It's best to keep your hands in yer pockets untill you have fathomed the job out!!!
