We are doing a project and did want under floor heating but assumed concrete floor. Thought better check and lifted carpet to see brown hard finish wondered if just a sealant so drilled into it and found it appears to be brown plastic type composite? The house is 19th century but could have been laid later, anyone any ideas?
cheers jon

The colour is right for Marley, if they are tiles about a 9 inches to a foot square that's what I would say they are. Best left alone. Joints will be very tight hard to see, wiping with a damp piece of kitchen towel might show them up better.

Cant find any sign of tiles might be big sheets? but havent pulled carpet back far enough. We need to knock down walls and put small extension on the two rooms with it, would it best to take hit and get proffesionally removed? would this have been laid on concrete or timber, i take it i could drill through and see, if timber and removed we could put in underfloor heating. Thanks for your help on this.

Never seen it in big sheets so that's a mystery, no harm in sending off a sample for asbestos testing, or better still getting a survey done anyway. There have been some weird bitumen coating / dpm products around in the past. I would be interested to know the outcome.

Looks like asphalt tell80 will tell us it's tarmac

thanks everyone if im having walls knocked down is it best to get it removed first?
