Hi there I have the above boiler which basically runs through the ignition sequence as this in hw mode

ignition
temperature guage goes up rapidly yellow light on all ok

No error messages at all but then theres a rushing sound like air is being expelled or somthink like that and then the yellow light goes out. water goes cold and if im lucky it ignites again and the process is followed again.

If I go through the ignition seqence in codes it stops at S.53. Something to do with the flow rate being toosteep and going into 10min delay.

Any advice to give to have to hand for an engineer when i call?

Plate HE blocked?

Does it run fine on CH ?

Has the hot water been running hot/cold for a while?

Tony

QED !

Installer did not clean system properly before fitting the boiler ( or the filling device has been left open since).

Tony

But the boiler hasnt been touched for two years, however, I did refill the system to get pressure up again

Could I have forgot to close filling system ?

I would hear water filling all the time wouldnt I? And the pressure remains the same?

What does QED mean, is it that roman thingy?

oK

Just checked loop and its not open so does this meean a new HE unit then

Thanks

Thanks for the advise

I just phoned vaillant and explained the problem and said that I had been advised that a HE was probably blocked

and they said no! if its running hot then cold its a doggey divertor valve

about 260 plus VAT? now im confused

Just called vaillant to confrim

260 inc vat not plus or 25 per month for 12 months all parts and labor which is reasonable

except the HE is not covered which might be a problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you prefer Vaillants advice then thats your preference!

The plate HE can be cleaned if you know how to but a new one is expensive at about £120.

We would charge only £136 inc to diagnose fault and clean plate HE which we usually fit a ready cleaned one if possible.

The dirt builds up in the plate HE since installation until after a few weeks, months or years.

No, I dont prefer their advice, I thought this was an inclusive forum with vaillant engineers on it

You seemed of pinpointed my problem straight away \Tony and I was just pointing out what vaillant could of charged me and it still would of been crook - so youve saved me lots of dosh already

I cannot be 100% sure as I am not in front of your boiler but I am 99% and thats enough for me.

The diverter does give problems on your boiler that thats one of two symptoms and each is very distinctive.

I am not very impressed with Vaillants reply but of course perhaps you did not descrive the symptoms very accurately. Remember it was only after I asked you about the water going cold/hot that you agreed. If you told them that they would probably have got it correct. But of course they dont fix boilers they only answer telephones.

Simple faults are easy to diagnose on boilers. Its the more complicated ones which are more interesting.

S.53 is poor circulation/blockage/heat transfer. Old diverter valves with a small circular drilling (radius 2mm) towards motor did have sticking ball problems otherwise it's a blocked plate-call Vaillant £215 fixed price.

Okey dokey

a non vaillant engineer came around (says he contributes to this forum) but I never contacted him through it.

Told me the divertor was sticking and removed the pin, told me that will give us hot water until he comes around and does a full corgi inspection.

Still dont understand about the S53 error - but the divertor did have four small bores around it so you could see into it, so maybe this the actual cause as an old type divertor and the HE plate is OK (or both need doing)

A corgi inspection will carry out detail check of the whole boiler I hope?

Anyway, thanks for the advise and we'll see next week

id love to know what a full corgi inspection was & what it would prove that a five minute inspection couldn't.

does it give you hot water now ?

If the diverter had stuck then it would give:-

Hot radiators in place of hot water. CH as usual.

OR

Hot water as usual but no central heating ( although boiler will fire up regularly to keep itself warm.

Well your engineer genie in a bottle who suddenly appeared at your door as if by magic, has examined your boiler and hopefuly has identified the problem although your description of the symptoms did not match a stuck diverter.

He has locked it in the DHW position. If it works normally on DHW and the temperature display does not rise too high ( 65° max ? ) and the water temperature is stable then the plate HE is OK.

Let us know the outcome and what this "CORGI inspection" entails.
