Turf laying

Hello,

I'm planning on laying some turf on a section of mud which is next to an existing area of grass. How much do I need to dig out in order that the turf is (roughly) level with the grass? Would a few inches do the trick?

Apologies for what's probably a basic question, it's just I haven't seen how think a roll of turf is and I want to crack on with prepping the area as I hear it needs to be laid the day of purchase.
