Turning off main water outside house

Thanks John.

Just concerned shaft is so deep. I note someone above said it must be “unusually deep as I can’t reach it by hand”. However my understanding is that they are all between 750mm and 1350mm, which is a fair bit deeper than I’ve reached.

See photos. Down 750mm now, using screwdriver attached to pole to poke around and expose stopcock. Worryingly, I think I’ve almost reached the base of the pit, but no sign of stopcock. Knowing my luck, I’ll be the only house without one-cover and put just for show.

Hi

Realise interest in this has fizzled out. Done a recce under other manholes where we live. Everyone seems to have a meter these days. Ergo, tap easy to access. No meter, and it’s three hundred feet underground. Perhaps this is water company incentive to have one fitted??

You can ask. I’m going working for Amey soon swapping old external stoptaps for new.

Thanks. Just concerned that ours may be at deep end of range ie 1350mm. Another 600mm would equate to another two feet?? How ridiculous is that? Almost Australia.

Had a very similar depth stopcock recently - I have arms like an ape and still had to cut the cross arms off a 3' stopcock key so it would fit down the 4" shaft to reach the stopvalve
