I'm looking for a new tv.... Can anybody recommend a make/model that would play movie files in the form of avi/MP4 on usb??

That's somewhat vague. Let's start with the size. How big a screen do you need?
Samsung score very well on "Which" test, and have USB and HDMI. You'd better look at the specs. They make several ranges of price and quality.
Mine will play and record with hard drives and memory sticks recorded on the PC, and will network; but if you want it to record, it formats to some weird format.
