Even if there was no intentional distinction you could look at the writing on the side where visible as it's the same way round along the whole cable.

That only works where you have sufficient length to be able to determine that.

Yeah hence the "where visible", should be a reasonable length available before stripping but if it doesn't work then just resort to connecting one core to cpc at the far end and test it that way

That's the way I'd do it. That was the belling of the cables I was talking about. Although in very many cases it's not important which is which (e.g. 1-way switch or for strappers).
