two on one breaker?

Hi there
I want to have a kick heater installed in my kitchen but there are no more spare breakers on my fusebox. Could an electrician just connect it into one of the exisiting breakers and if so would it effect the breaker rating?

At the moment there is one breaker which just serves a socket for the garage on a 32A breaker. The heater is 2.2KW maximum.

I suppose the other thing would be to connect it onto the same cct as teh garage socket as part of a radial but this might need a lot of cabling.

Any advice? many thanks
 
Its only 2.2kw so does not need its own circuit. you could run a spur from an existing socket on a ring final.

Probably better to get a qualified spark in to do this as electrical work in a kitchen now has to be notified to LABC

I wouldn't do it myself. I just wondered if there was any reason a cable couldn't just be run from heater and connected into the same breaker as the garage socket which is not a ring a tthe moment.

If not I will pay the sparky to cable onto the garage circuit. Would it have to be on a ring or could he just connect into teh socket as a radial?

It will depend on how the garage is wired, what protective device is there, what the capacity of the circuit etc. Your spark can advise.
 
Generally it's one circuit per breaker but I'll often find two per breaker especially for lighting circuits - not necessarily dangerous just depends on matters previously mentioned
 
Hope that 32A breaker has a suitably sized cable attached to it.

Its weird really, would be perfectly acceptable in 2.5mm² if there was a RFC attached to the same breaker....
 
Thanks for the advice chaps. I'm no expert but the wiring to the 32A breaker looks like 2.5mm to but it was done before I ever moved in. Am i right in thinking that this is unsafe on a radial circuit but ok on a ring?

Also what is an RFC?

a ring can carry 32A using 2.5mm because it has two cables carrying the load between them... one in and one out... so the load is actually carried over 5mm of cable (this is a simplification and also why a break in a ring, or loads concentrated at one end, are undesirable).

A radial in 2.5mm is OK at 20Amps

RFC is Ring Final Circuit
