type of wood and staining...

Hi there,

I am looking to build a frame to house a glass pane, indoors, from floor to ceiling.

1) What type of wood do I want to use, which will do the job and look nice?

2) Regarding wood type, I have stained a few items in the room I'm building it in and they've come out looking like a nice black walnut. Can pretty much any type of wood be stained this colour or only certain? (I've stained ply and its come out surprisingly well).

Sorry if I've called it the wrong name - it seems every shop calls it something different - but I meant that deep brown colour by black walnut. Similar to the picture.
