U shaped reinforcing rod/bar

Hello

I really find this forum useful so thank you to everyone who responds.

I am trying to find some U Shaped metal rod - either reinforcing rod/bar or something similar as I need to secure a set of steps onto a riverbank. When the river is in flood in the winter there is a chance the steps could be swept away so I want to secure them down. However, I am finding it hard to locate something locally.

A U shaped rod or an extra large tent peg like product would be great. Does anyone know which builders merchants would sell something like this. I don't need loads - just 4, so buying online with the carriage is not cost effective. I have tried Bradfords and Jewsons and have hit a dead end so I thought I'd ask around on here.

Is there a local blacksmith nearby? He could knock up what you want in minutes - to any size you need.

Look on ebay maybe for 'fence pins' or 'marquee pegs'.

Personally I'd consider getting some galvanised angle or similar and really bashing it into the bank side - and then casting your steps around that. A sort of underpinning, if you like.

Are these new steps being added to the river bank ? If so give careful thought to the effect they might have on the flow when the river is in flood and flowing fast.

Something that disturbs the smooth flow along the bank and creates turbulance should be avoided as the turbulance is likely to erode the banks much faster than a fast but smooth flow of water.

What about unistut? That's the u shaped metal that is used to hang heating/ lighting to large buildings. I assume that it is galvanised.

You could sharpen the end with an angle grinder
