Sounds like the Aussies are going to tell the EU to 'do one' as far as there trade deal is concerned.

The Australian deal is ground breaking in that unlike the other 60 odd deals we've negotiated, most of which are along the lines of existing deals with the EU (and didn't that wind them up), the Oz deal was from scratch, the EU are still negotiating with Oz, with Oz on the verge of walking away due to unreasonable demands (nothing to do with animal welfare either).
More importantly it opens us up to the trans pacific partnership which would mean deals with a further 11 countries in a market expanding far quicker than the EU.

The EU are insular and protectionist, and shrinking.

Yeah ok.

Australia does 3x trade with EU....and the potential is far greater.

UK is now just a tiny economy

Same as Switzerland Notchy, if signing a deal means becoming completely subservient to that country, best just tell them to **** off. As 'your lot' has been eager to point out, FTA's aren't earth shattering insofar as benefits are concerned, so WTF would you sign away your life.

Australia disagrees:

"Australia’s trade relationship with the EU outweighs trade with the UK by a ratio of approximately 3 to 1 so focus must be on the EU as well as separate opportunities with the UK"

Interesting that you acknowledge EU is great at negotiating the best deals for its members.

So if we told Australia that they may not export hormone-fed beef to us, that would make them subservient to us, would it, and they should tell us to **** off?

Not all countries have bans on the use of lead paint. Should we shy away from making them subservient to us and allow poisonous products from them into the UK?

Which of our product safety stadards should we waive in trade agreements?

Have any of you ever tasted Australian beef........ It's the best ... and that's amazing considering they eat a lot of dust.
