You’d things would have been dangerous back then but we did not have piles of dead bodies littering the streets though.
The councils works force a called around every Thursday and collected them up.
Things were arguably safer back the cos folk had a bit more respect for electrics and motor cars etc etc, nowadays folks have airbags and ABS and drive around like flipping maniacs, no RCDs back then, folk were a lot more careful.
