hi all,

We recently bought a new build house, which includes a combi boiler (never had one before so if I'm being dense then please tell me :) ). The boiler in question is an Ultracom2 35cxi. We don't have a hot water tank. The boiler was turned off over the summer while the house got finished off.

My confusion is around the "Mode". The way it was explained to us; pressing this button will cycle through HW, CH, Neither, Both. And that seems to be the case from the symbols displayed on the LCD screen. However, those options don't relate to what the boiler actually does.

Instead, when CH is enabled the boiler continually makes a sound as if it's pumping water around in a loop. If HW is turned on we get hot water from the taps and also the radiators heat up (as controlled by the thermostats). If HW is not enabled we get no heating.

It's almost as if they've connected the heating and the hot water to the same mode, which could make sense given that we don't have a storage tank?

If someone could explain what's going on for me that would be great as I've tried getting the installers to do so but they just fob me off. (TBH they don't seem to want to understand my issue and their customer service lady even had a go at me for "changing things" on my own boiler! Apparently I shouldn't press the big accessible button on the front and the unit shouldn't have been turned off while the house was empty for 3 months in the summer :/ )

Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing if you lot can help :)

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried pressing the reset button?

No but would it not have done the same thing when turning it off and on again? That's been done a few times since we got it and it's still the same.

Also I was kind of wary that pressing reset would lose whatever settings the installers had put on there.

Make a note of all the parameters before resetting. Then you can change them, if necessary, after pressing reset.

See Section 13.2 on page 28 of the Installation Manual

Sorry for not checking back, I've been away over Christmas.

The boiler is under warranty, tbh I was actually hoping for the response of "yes that's normal when you have no tank" so I wouldn't have to deal with the unhelpful people again.

From the lack of such a response though it looks like I'm going to have to force them to send someone out.

I'll post the outcome if/when that happens.

Sorry for bringing this topic back but I wanted to let people know the outcome in case anyone else has the same issue.

I got the electricians out who dealt with this estate and it turns out that the guy who'd installed it had left a certain override jumper in place and the unit was in a testing mode. The electrician had seen it several times before and took about 30 seconds to fix it, including taking the cover off and putting it back on again so this should be really easy for anyone who knows what they are doing.

Hope that helps someone and thanks for the replies.
