Under cabinet lighting. Supply from cooker hood?

Hi all.

In the process of installing an angled cooker hood above our hob.

At the moment we dont have any wall units either side of the cooker hood but now think it looks a bit bare so i am going to fit some either side.

I would like to have some under cupboard Led lighting but as the kitchen has been plastered and painted the only way i can see of doing this would be to spur off the cooker hood supply cable. Is this ok?

There is a FCU adjacent to the cooker hood chimney at the top of the wall/ceiling. This is the supply for the hood.

I was looking at putting a junction box inside the chimney and running cables to eachwall cupboard but this would mean notching out each side of the chimney at the bottom for cable access. The cable wouldnt be on show.

Does this sound ridiculous??

If you run the cable above the wall cabs and hoods it will be out of sight and you don't need to chase it into the wall. Mini-trunking will protect it from grease.

Is the outlet fed from the lighting circuit or a socket circuit?

How will you switch the lights on and off?

Ahhh i have noticed the hood wiring has no earth wire in the cable.

Yeah the FCU has incoming earth wires and an earth wire from the back box to the FCU

The under shelf lighting we have on the other side of the kitchen also has no earth. These are wired via a plug

You might consider this:

take a flex from the FCU to a multiway adaptor (or a junction box or wiring centre if you like that sort of thing)

supply the cooker hood and the lights by plugging into the socket or connection

you will have to add cable restraints if not using plugs

It could go in or on one or your wall cabinets.
