The cowboy/diyer couldn't be bothered to at least run the cable round the edge.

Too much cable required for that ! Have you see the price of cooper ?
Looks as if you're going to by busy :(

There's one in PE, I think, this month, where the t+e appears to have been notched into the floorboards the entire way. Genius, but crazy

What's more unbelievable is there appears to be a loose floorboard which may have helped.

My ex father in law had a floorboard just like that!
He had been doing some work and asked me to help by screwing the boards back down for him. One screw wouldn't 'bite' so I tapped it with a hammer then screwed it fully home. 10 minutes later both sitting there with a cuppa and a fag when he asks, "Can you smell gas?"

You guessed it. The screw I tapped then screwed home had gone through his central heating supply pipe!
Well it was him that placed the boards in position and that one had only 1 screw hole each end like the one in the picture!

Ye, my brother in law did that on Boxing Day ! My mother has never let him forget it !

Found this screw through a plastic rad pipe last week. When I removed the screw to lift the chipboard water squirted up. Turns out it had been like it for 10 years and never any sign of it leaking!

That's the trouble with plastic pipe you can test for copper & cables but it won't show up... I'd mark the floor & place mechanical protection over it even in my own house!

The flex to my storage heater was notched into the screed across the hall, then 'made good' with plaster.
