I live in an old cottage and have been advised that the old metal feed pipe from the main to the cottage is going to get worse. The Water Board have advised a new plastic pipe feed. The length would be 90 feet and require a trench 30" deep for this distance. I have been quoted locally at £2000, this includes mini digger hire and skip hire together with a plumber.
Can you advise me if this is a reasonable price please. The trench would be up the middle of the drive (which is loose planings) and then involves the lifting of about 5 2x3 flags to complete. I have made a rough costing myself and the hire and the plumber seem to be about £500.

digger and driver about £150-200 per day.
pipe about £40
fittings about a tenner
About a days works.
You work it out.
2 mens labour plus digger driver.
If it worked out at £900 I'd be surprised.

get a moling company to give you a quote, I had one done, 20m hole dug every 5m and only took about 4 hours, cost about £300

I had heard about moling but was told that there were too many rocks in the strata in this area !

thats that idea out the window then.

if you start digging that will save a cost on labour.

Don't think my back would stand all that but am quite prepared to have a go with the mini digger. Could I do this, am very practical but what about the hire company, insurance etc ? Don't tell me I'd need to go on a course !
